ARTIST STATEMENT
I
am constantly bowled over by the heartbreaking beauty of the world and am
compelled to translate the emotional response that I experience (what Milton
Avery called “the ecstasy of the moment”) to paint and paper. Watermedia provides me with the luminosity
and vibrant colors to create an atmosphere that celebrates the joy of life -
and hints at its transitory nature. My inspiration primarily comes from the
fields, farms, forests, and seacoasts of the Northeast. The subjects of my
paintings are reduced to simplified shapes that provide clues to their history
and our ties to them.
ABOUT MY
ART
My artistic intent is to convey my personal response to a
subject rather than to portray a realistic image. The subjects of my paintings are clearly
recognizable though reduced to simple shapes with few details. By distilling the image to its essence, I can
focus on the feeling that the subject evokes in me. I consider myself to be a Colorist, as I love
to work with bright, juicy color. My
preferred medium is acrylic, applied to paper or board. The
rural landscapes and architecture of the Northeast provide my
inspiration.
WORDS TO
PAINT BY:
“A work of art which did not begin in emotion is not art.”
Paul Cézanne
“Reality can be beaten with enough imagination.” Mark Twain
“When I paint the house in Maine that my father built, I’m painting my
father.”
Fairfield Porter
